About the Festival

Summertime in Montreal is packed with food, drink, art, music, comedy, cultural and ethnic festivals. With so much happening, picking which events to attend can become a burden, not to mention exhausting and expensive. However, for many in the LGBT community in Montreal and beyond, when Divers/Cité comes to town in late July, the choice is a simple one. As a world class arts and music festival that celebrates “diversity in a spirit of sharing, solidarity and openness with the world”, Divers/Cité features over 47 hours of free outdoor performances spread out across several venues in the village. The festival consists of a variety of outdoor and indoor events showcasing “modern dance, blues, jazz, pop, Latin, rock, world, funk, ambient, techno and electronic concerts, drag queen performances and an outdoor cinema.”

For EDM fans, there is no short supply of DJ events both outdoors and indoors at some of the hottest clubs in the village. For many, the highlight of the festival is ‘New Society’ and ‘La Grande Danse’. Both are free outdoor DJ events that feature some of the hottest names in house, trance and progressive and consistently draw thousands of spectators year after year. Past performers at ‘New Society’ include: Infected Mushroom, Sied van Riel, Cosmic Gate, Marcel Woods, Bobina, Mischa Daniels, Second Sun and Ulrich Van Bell. Past performers at ‘La Grande Danse’ include: Peter Rauhofer, Ana Paula, Isaac Escalante, Magic Solutions, Danny Verde & Anna Buckley, Abel Ramos, Miswhite, Freemasons, David Penn, Pablo Ceballos, and Offer Nissim.

In 1993, Divers/Cité organized the first LGBT celebrations in Montreal, and up until 2006, the festival included: the pride parade, the community fair and the arts and music festival. In 2007, Divers/Cité shifted towards two public LGBT events: one event that focuses on development of the LGBT community, and the other a full-blown arts and music festival. Divers/Cité is now considered an internationally recognized and acclaimed LGBT festival, with many people travelling from outside the province and country to attend the events.

Although many of the outdoor events are free, a small donation of $5 is recommended. Outside food and drink is not permitted in the outdoor venues. Food, drinks and alcohol are all available for sale onsite for outdoor events. Most of the free outdoor events start early/late afternoon and last until midnight.
