About the Festival

Regarded as one of the most “gay-friendly” cities in the world, it is only fitting that Montreal is home to the world’s largest gay-benefit dance festival; Black & Blue. Founded in 1991 by Robert Vezina and Christian Beaudry, Black & Blue is organized by Bad Boy Club Montreal (Foundation BBCM) and consists of 5 days of festivities over Canadian Thanksgiving in October attracting around 60,000 people from Montreal, Canada, the United States, Europe, Australia and beyond. The goal of the festival is to bring people of all sexual orientations together to celebrate diversity and help raise funds to combat HIV/AIDS. In over two decades, the Foundation BBCM has donated over $1,400,000 to multiple organizations and charities that help fight the deadly disease as well as other GLBT groups.

Black & Blue consists of 5 main rave style events:

Thursday: Jock Ball

Friday: Leather Ball

Saturday: Military Ball

Sunday: Black & Blue (main event)

Monday: Recovery Party

Other events include various art expositions and sporting activities in and around Montreal.

The main attraction of the Black & Blue Festival takes place on Sunday and is typically held at a large venue such as Palais Des Congres or the Olympic Stadium attracting some 8,000 partygoers dressed in black and blue attire for an all night dance party that concludes at noon on Monday. Over the years, the demographic of the crowd has become pretty much 50/50 gay and straight, strengthening the message of the festival that we are all one.

In recent years, the main event of Black & Blue has had both a “House” and “Trance” room, similar to Bal en Blanc. Since its creation, some of the world’s biggest names in House and Trance have graced the decks at Black & Blue including: Danny Tenaglia, Victor Calderone, Peter Rauhofer, Chus & Ceballos, Roger Sanchez, D-Formation, Gabriel & Dresden, Dave Seaman, John Digweed, Sasha, Misstress Barbara, Mark Anthony, Artento Divini, Marcus Schossow, Max Graham, Super8 & Tab, Andy Moor, W&W, John O’Callaghan, Leon Bolier, Arnej, Mark Sherry, The Cube Guys, Hernan Cattaneo, and Gareth Emery.
